Hermes Birkin & Kelly Basics

Hermes Birkins come in sizes 25, 30, 35, 40 and 45cm. The 45 is a travel Birkin with slightly longer straps. Hermes Kelly bags come in sizes 20, 25, 28, 32, and 35 cm. The most popular sizes are 28 and 32. The Kelly bag is either going to be rigide (outside stitching and more expensive) or souple (softer feel, inside stitching). Hermès Haut à Courroies (HAC)

Hermès Haut à Courroies means High Belts in French. This bag also called the old birkin. The Haut à Courroies, or HAC, was designed in the late 1800’s for the purpose of transporting riding gear: saddle, boots, hunting equipment, etc. The HAC was the original travel bag model from which Hermes created the Birkin by making it handbag size.

Hermes HAC is taller than the Birkin, and has shorter straps. Today Hermes makes both HAC and Birkins in handbag sizes, however they have different metal hardware. Hermes Birkin has square(instead of rounded)brackets to hold the straps as well as a round Birkin turnkey, as opposed the square one normally used on Hermes HAC.

Leathers information

togo - grained leather, holds its shape quite well a bit stiff not very scratch prone a little glowclemence - more matte then togo a flatter grained very buttery soft so it slouches more (it looks a bit like ironed togo)

epsom - stiff textured leather (kind to be compared to vuitton taiga) has a wonderful sheen to it but to some it appears plasticy colours are way darker on this leather very scratch resistant.

fjord - very heavy bull leather very textured but also sturd and nearly waterproof it looks a bit masculine.

chevre de coromandel - goat leather with a shiny finish very exotic looking due to the spine soft lightweight scratch resistant durable.

chevre mysore - a more matte goat leather where the spine is less durable.

box - classic shiny box calf leather prone to scratches but ages wonderfully and gets a gorgeous patina very classic looking.

chamonix - a variation of box leather but matte looking.

Barenia - a classic saddle calf leather.

ostrich- the lightest leather of them all very durable no problem with water get softer while the years go by but still holds its shape no problem with water ages wonderfully.

lizard - a very exotic looking leather if ordered in glazed it sparkles like diamond encrusted due to the small scales. can not handle water at all ages well but there is the possibility that the scales lift so take good care of it.

porosus croc - the queen of the crocs very even and small scale pattern can not handle water well due to the glazing but really makes colours pop ages but colours appear darker on it ages gracefully.

niloticus croc - a more "wild" looking croc scale pattern colours tend to look really vibrant on it a tad cheaper than porosus and it is just a personal taste thing which croc pattern you love more

Origin of the Hermes Birkin bag

It is named after British-born actress and singer Jane Birkin, a longtime resident of France. Press accounts of the bag's genesis differ in details. Birkin told noted fashion writer Dana Thomas that while seated next to Hermès CEO Jean-Louis Dumas in 1984 on a Paris to London flight, she opened her Hermès-made datebook and a flurry of loose notes fell to the floor. Dumas took her datebook and returned it a few weeks later with a pocket sewn into the back (which has since become standard). Birkin went on to discuss with Dumas her difficulty in finding a leather weekend bag and at his prompting, described her ideal. Shortly thereafter, the bag she described arrived at her flat with a note from Dumas.
A more piquant version of the story was repeated by film director Andrew Litvack. He put the year as 1981 and says that Birkin was called to Hermès to receive the first Hermes Birkin prototype. As she was leaving with the bag, they asked if she had forgotten something. Puzzled, she realized they wanted her to pay for it. Litvack claims Birkin was eventually reimbursed, and now receives a 10% discount on Hermès products.
